Welcome to Nursery- We are the Magnificent Minnows!
After Easter we have had some new children join us in Nursery and we are all working together to settle them in, modelling our rules and routines for them to follow.
We are starting this term learning about transport- we have already learned all about road, air and rail transport and this week we will be looking at water transport, reading the story of 'Jack and the Flum Flum Tree' and 'Mr Gumpy's outing.'
We will be using our imaginations to create submarines and boats in different areas of nursery.
We have been learning some fab songs about transport too- we will add these to the website soon so that you can sing these at home with your children!
After our transport topic, we will be moving onto learning about an artist called Wassily Kandinsky, who used bold colours and shapes in his paintings, which we will be replicating in our own creations using paint, collage and reclaimed materials.
To find out more about his work, visit the Wassily Kandinsky website by clicking here.
We will also be continuing the work we started on looking how animals grow and change from the Spring Term, when we have caterpillars delivered to Nursery. The children will witness how the caterpillars eat, grow and change right here in Nursery! We have done this before in Nursery and the children love watching nature work right before their eyes!
This Week in Nursery
In Nursery this week, we are practising taking turns by playing games together and listening to each other's ideas as we play. Our other main focus this week is retelling familiar stories- we will be focusing on the story of Jack and the Flum Flum Tree by Julia Donaldson, but children can retell any story that they are familiar with. At bedtime, when you share a story with your child, encourage them to join in with repeated refrains in the story or even allow them to 'read' a story they love to you- you'll be surprised what great storytellers we are in Nursery!
In phonics, we will be continuing our initial sound work, by recapping the sounds we have learned so far and using these to find words that begin with these sounds. The sounds we have learned so far are s,a,e,r,i,c and m. You can help develop your child's knowledge of these further by playing I spy and alphabet games. Please continue to help your child to read and recognise the sounds in their name. Having a good foundation knowledge of some sounds will really help them when they start in Reception. We have also been learning all about rhyming words, reading lots of rhyming stories and making silly sentences with rhyming words.
In Little Big Maths, we will be consolidating our knowledge from the year, particularly focusing on language relating to size, length, height, weight and capacity. Let your child experiment with different containers in the bath, bake cakes together, measure the members of your family and talk about who is the tallest/ shortest......the list could go on!
Our 'Learn Its' are shapes and their properties- we want the children to name 2D shapes instantly and be able to talk about how many edges/ sides/ corners/ points they have. We will begin to introduce 3D shapes later in the term too.
Just a little reminder of our donations pot- we ask for a donation of £1 a week for your child which can be put in our pot any morning. We ask for this donation to cover the cost of playdough ingredients, cooking activities and any other extra curricular activities that we do.
