Welcome to Nursery- We are the Magnificent Minnows!
This term our author of the term is
He has written many stories and we have read a few in Nursery so far. We have enjoyed The Bad Tempered Ladybird, The Very Busy Spider and Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See?
We have also read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which many of the children already knew and so have done brilliantly at retelling the story and making caterpillars in different ways. We have been very excited about the arrival of our very own class caterpillars which we are watching eat, grow and change in front of our very eyes!
We have been doing lots of work on shapes and colours in Maths. We have been looking at the artwork of Wassily Kandinsky, who uses a variety of shapes and colours to create beautiful pictures. To extend your child at home, see what shapes and colours you can see around you, in your home and on your way to Nursery. Name the shapes (concentrate on circle, triangle, square and rectangle) with your child and talk about how many sides, points or corners they have got. Use words such as long, short, straight and curved to describe the shapes. Talk about how we use shapes in pictures- what shape would we draw for the wheels? Why? What shaped windows would you have on your house?
We have loved creating our own colourful shape paintings and collages in Nursery- we will be creating a display of our work for you to take a look at pick up and drop off times.

This Week in Nursery
This week we have been watching our caterpillars carefully, looking at how they are changing. In Little Big Maths, we have been learning about the meaning of 'few' and 'lots', learning the numbers 3 and 4 and understanding that we have 5 fingers on one hand- a fact that we know without counting!
In phonics, we have been reading rhyming stories, learning new sounds and listening for what words begin with. We have also been working with our names, learning what sounds we have and where we can spot them in different places!
We are learning to develop our reading skills by recognising familiar text, such as shop signs and names, and retelling stories that we know really well, such as Supertato and The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
We also have been doing some baking, making chocolate chip cookies! The children enjoyed it so much, we have posted the recipe in our documents below! You will also find the caterpillar song that we have been learning in Nursery too, so you can sing along with your children at home!
